Automotive Crankshaft

The asymmetrical, long, and relatively slender crankshaft forms the heart of any combustion engine, from two-wheelers to heavy trucks. It is also one of the most challenging machine components. Its design, combined with high tolerance requirements and the problematic machinability of materials like forged steel or nodular cast iron, requires highly optimized tools and methods for successful manufacturing.


Automotive Camshaft

In an internal combustion engine, the camshaft controls the movement and timing of the valves. It features a shaft with multiple lobes, one for each valve. As the camshaft rotates, the cam lobes push on the valves (or an intermediate mechanism), causing them to open. The machining requirements on camshafts follow the same trends as those for crankshafts, focusing on performance, lower fuel consumption, and fewer emissions.

The connecting rod transfers the linear motion of the pistons into rotational motion for the crankshaft. It endures significant stress from the reciprocating load, experiencing stretching and compression with each rotation. This load increases exponentially at higher engine speeds. Today, the big eye is separated ahead of time rather than parting with a milling cutter. The big eye may be pre-machined with a laser, which places high demands on the subsequent boring operation. The machining of connecting rods must be precise and cost-efficient.
